My client designs and makes large prefabricated buildings using mainly steel. This steel needs to be accurately designed by teams using their understanding of construction and drawn/detailed using computer-aided-design programs.
A steelwork detailer takes a general design concept, works out the best design then creates accurate and complete drawings that a workshop can use to actually fabricate (ie cut, drill, weld etc) the steel for the buildings.
My client is keen to meet suitable candidates for a trainee steelwork detailer role. This person will come on board, learn the ropes and grow with the team.
I am looking for a specific type of person:
Eye for detail:
We require people who can demonstrate that they are naturally well-organised, tidy operators, able to focus well and follow a job through to completion.
Interest in buildings / construction / design:
Although we do not require years of experience, an important factor is that you genuinely have an interest in designing things like buildings. This is a fantastic career option with a massive future ahead of it, but to excel, you must have a real interest in particularly the engineering side of buildings.
This is a professional team environment, so you will need to be capable or writing and speaking to a good level. You do not need to be hugely outgoing or able to speak to crowds of people, but you do need to be able to convey your ideas clearly.
We will be looking for candidates with above-average capabilities with computers. What do we mean by that? Well, more than writing a letter, sending emails, posting on Facebook. If you are better than most with any graphics package, spreadsheets, maybe have had a go with some design / CAD software, then that is the sort of thing we are looking for.
Right to work:
For this role, we do require NZ Citzenship / Permanent Residence and unfortunately cannot consider candidates without these.
If you are lucky enough to secure this role, you start with the engineering design team, learning:
- Construction steelwork design: (steel sizes, shapes, welding/bolting styles, connection details)
- Draughting: How to draw steel plans/sections/details to that the fabricators can manufacture correctly
- CAD (Computer-aided-design): The company uses a specialist CAD package (Tekla) which you would learn.
You will be working with an expanding team to play a part in an ever-changing world of smart construction. It's a wise career move.
Most of our day will be detailing, liaising with other design team members and the fabricators, but in any typical week, you will be interacting with engineers, clients, councils and architects to ensure an excellent job is delivered. On Offer:
The rewards for the right person are many:
- join a company experiencing long term growth in a booming sector.
- become part of a friendly well-managed firm with exceptional "people" values.
- a modern well-resourced office with advanced CAD and technology.
- get to work in a great part of the country.
This role is based in Timaru, an exceptional South Canterbury city known for good schools, family lifestyle and quality, affordable housing. Many of our candidates have enjoyed the comprehensive city feature, proximity of skiing and water sport centres and the opportunity to get on the property ladder.
Sites are located throughout New Zealand and, on occasions, some short term travel (day trips mainly) may be involved.
To register your interest, please apply below, or, for a discreet chat about this position, please call Lachlan McNeill on 021 1130175 daytime and evenings until 8pm.
