Privately owned and founded in 1981 by Craig and Penny Hickson, Progressive Meats in Hastings now employs 400+ staff and has processing facilities for lamb, beef, vension and rams.
Craig is one of the red meat sector’s stalwarts. In 2012 he was awarded the Agribusiness Person of the Year for his outstanding contribution to the industry and in 2015 was awarded NZ Entrepreneur of the Year. He works closely with Progressive Meats leadership team and sits on several meat sector boards.

Working in a new management team and reporting to the General Manager, this is a key senior management role within Progressive Meats. You will be responsible for leading and driving operational performance across the Hastings manufacturing site, ensuring that it operates in an efficient, compliant, safe, and optimal manner that is in line with Progressive Meat's vision, mission, and business direction.
This varied role focuses on daily interaction with the supervisory team ensuring successful plans and schedules are in place including maintaining and improving staff engagement to ensure the plant is running at capacity. Your role will include establishing effective business processes and measures, reviewing operational performance, maintaining, and ensuring your staff receive appropriate coaching and development. A key function is to lift the client and customer experience, building and enhancing key relationships through better procurement, product quality and delivery.
To succeed in this role, you will be an engaging and contemporary leader with the ability to establish strong relationships across your peer group and ensuring your teams receive appropriate coaching and development. You will have several the following attributes:
- Food processing operations management experience, preferably meat processing.
- Proven leadership experience applying a continuous improvement mind-set to quality systems, food safety, animal welfare and health and safety controls
- Strong financial and commercial acumen
- High level of organisation and energy
- Customer driven
- Computer / technology proficient
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to multitask effectively.
Ideally, we are looking for an experienced Operations Manager, but we will consider applications from ambitious people who can demonstrate the manufacturing knowledge and ability to take the next step into such a role.
Remuneration consists of a base salary, and a generous management team performance bonus scheme.
