Commercial scale renewable energy is one of the fastest growing niches and destined to expand considerably over the next 10 years with solar leading the charge. Developments in energy capture, management and storage mean this technology is available to go where it is needed most. Some of these are large scale developments, others remote communities for whom this may be the first time they have permanent lighting / power in place.

From their base in New Zealand this fast-moving company has risen to the challenge of taking renewable energy from the drawing board it to the people of the world. While at home they are winning awards for astute business acumen and being a champion of innovation, the action is also happening elsewhere on the planet. Now, having delivered successful projects in Central Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific Islands, they are now taking their resources, talent and people connections on to bigger things. Recent project incluse the Solomon Island, Kiribati, Fiji, Tuvala, Cook Island, Kiwimati, Nauru, Raratonga and PNG.
With another Project Manager moving to a new role, an opening has arisen for a particular type of person to step into their shoes and make this role their own.
The core purpose is to work with the team to design, build and commission renewable energy generation & distribution projects. The work will start after scoping and finish with a fully operational and commissioned system. Initially these will typically be grid-tied or off-grid photo-voltaic solar generation micro-grid electrical systems, and ongoing R&D may broaden this to encompass water, thermal and other high efficiency HV/MV/LV solutions as they come on stream.
Based in the modern Central Wellington offices with other PM's, you will work closely with the business, planning & design experts and Site Managers to manage projects from early stage proposals, through design and right through to site completion.
- Reviewing proposals and forecasting resources
- Creating and monitoring Project Programmes and budgets
- Managing the progress of projects through design, procurement and delivery stages.
- Handling all compliance, programme and budget challenges.
- At least 3 years' experience in delivering medium sized engineering / construction projects.
- Hands-on experience in managing remote projects.
- A proven interest in renewable energy and/or power systems.
- Good computer skills (MS Office Suite and MS Project)
- Exception communications and interpersonal skills across cultures
Although based in Wellington, there will be occasional travel to sites required. This is not likely to be considered excessive but you may occasionally be required to be away from home to visit multiple locations up to two weeks at a time You will need to have a valid passport, have a full clean drivers licence and have the health and fitness to handle a variety of location, environments and site conditions.
Many of these projects bring new technology to often remote communities for whom this can be strange and challenging concept. The key to this team's success is the ability to understand and adapt to local customs, behaviours and structures to become the friendly face of the project. In practice, this means joining in a trench digging team or a village wedding, and the key is to act and communicate with confidence and sensitivity. The rewards hardly need explaining.
